Though Mr. Nsima Ekere, the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State said he resigned from office “on personal grounds”, we can however authoritatively report that he tendered his resignation letter when he got wind of an advanced plot to impeach him from office following heightened tension between himself and Governor Godswill Akpabio over his governorship ambition in 2015.
Another factor that worked against Ekere was that he had on two instances in the last few weeks frustrated Akpabio’s plot to get assemblymen to impeach the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Elder Sam Ikon. Sources said Akpabio was miffed at Ekere’s interference in the plot.
The governor is believed to be grooming his SSG, Umana O Umana as his successor in 2015.
There are 27 elected members in the state house of assembly.
It is authoritative that Akpabio had successfully mobilized assemblymen at the State House of Assembly to begin impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor tomorrow (Thursday).
At a meeting with majority of the assemblymen in his Ukana country home this morning, Akpabio perfected the plot to ditch his deputy. The decision taken at the Ukana meeting was however leaked to Ekere, forcing him to tender his letter of resignation in order to block his impeachment and keep his 2015 governorship hope alive.
