Security has been beefed up in Yenagoa and its environs as Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa begins campaign on Saturday for the PDP governorship primaries scheduled for Nov.19.
The situation was noticed since Friday in Yenagoa, with check points at strategic locations.
Apart from the campaign, scheduled to hold at Samson Siasia Stadium, the check points surfaced following recent cult related killings in the state.
NAN reports that as early as 7 a.m., security operatives from the Police and the SSS had cordoned off the Sports Complex with Amoured Personnel Carriers (APC).
Heavy security presence was noticed at Kolokuma/Opokuma and Sagbama, headquarters of the Local Government Areas of the state.
ASP Eguaveon Emokpai, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), said the situation was part of the measures to contain the security challenges in the state.
Emokpai, who confirmed that policemen were drafted from neighbouring states, said: “We have mobile police units from other states to assist in beefing up the security. “
