We are glad to confirm that Mr. James Ikenna Onuoha, the Exxon Mobil staff who raped a 14 years old teenager has been arrested by the police.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmus, who confirmed the arrest revealed that the case had been transferred to Zone 2 Command, Onikan.
Representatives of the Women Against Violence Group, the group that emailed us when the rape occurred, spoke to us about the update.
According to the group, James submitted himself to the police after a letter was sent to his employer, ExxonMobil Nigeria, which assured them that they would provide the suspect if he failed to turn up himself.
The group confirmed that the Lagos state government was also involved and had taken interest in the case through the office of the public defender and the ministry of justice.
“They sent representatives, and have even offered to offer financial assistance for the medical tests,” they said.
“We are at a dilemma on how to inform the girl’s mother in the village. She has just been in Lagos for three weeks before it happened. We visited LASUTH for some tests as we can’t rule out pregnancy and other sexually transmitted diseases.
“It’s unfortunate that a man of that exposure, with wife and kids could do such a thing. He said they were owing him rent, please, where is the connection between the rent and the girl’s private part?
“We want justice. Justice for us is whatever the law stipulates for such a crime. Justice for us is that he sets up a trust fund for her education and pays her medical bills. Justice for us is some form of compensation because the girl has suffered.
“He tried to intimidate the girl’s family and sent his lawyer. Infact, they wanted to relocate to the village but for our timely intervention. Perhaps, it wont be this bad for him if he had simply honoured the invitation by the police at the onset rather than flex muscle”
The group called on rape victims to speak up assuring them of so many agencies available to fight their cause saying a rape to one is a rape to all
